Professional Ethics

Now that society has entered a new era of humanism, there are a lot of problems that require stable solutions. Life and death are first concerns of any human being and therefore people who mastered professions like policemen, doctors, and rescue teams that are closely connected with the terms mentioned are to keep to the code of professional ethics. Now no other profession, except a doctor has to make the choice now.

A respectable professional faces this decision one day. Looking at a pale patient in front of him and hearing the words “no hope” in his head, it is quite hard to choose between what is right and what is simple. He recollects discussions over this problem at the university and wishes he gave a problem a serious thought before. There is not much time to think but a lot to consider. Relatives that ask for euthanasia may be the inheritance hunters; he may be put to prison for such a decision, a patient may still recover even though his hopeless state is scientifically proved. Opinions may be quite subjective and irrelevant to the situation and therefore the burden of choice falls on a person that strives to save lives, not to take them. Now we see that being a doctor is not only a profession, it is a calling that requires courage, intellect and a kind heart.

Euthanasia was performed till nineteenth century and in some countries was prohibited along with death penalty. Present day society considers merciful killing to be inhumane, same as federal punishment. But on the hospital bed lays not a criminal, but a suffering person, besides a doctor swears to help those in need regardless their position. What if a patient requires such kind of help? Not every individual that is hopelessly sick has the opportunity to right this aspect down in his will. One of the Ten Commandments says not to kill, but can this act of releasing from torture be called a killing. The majority is likely not to notice the word “merciful” in front of “killing” that spreads panic between people who are afraid of death. It is hard to understand and embrace a position of a doctor even if you are a wonderful psychologist or philosopher. That is why a profession of a doctor is noble and honorable. Sooner or later the choice is to be maid and whatever it is, we are to respect an individual that took the burden of responsibility upon his shoulders.
